CARL A. WICKLAND, M.D.
Pioneer Psychiatrist
Carl A. Wickland was born February
14th 1861 at Liden, Norland Province, Sweden. In his youth Carl Wickland
learned, from his father, the trade of cabinet maker, and later that of
watchmaker.
In 1880 he left Sweden and arrived in
St. Paul, Minn. in 1881. He married
Anna W. Anderson in 1896 and shortly thereafter they moved to Chicago
where Carl Wickland entered Durham
Medical College from which he
graduated in 1900. He
followed the general practice of medicine while specializing in research
in mental illnesses.
Dr. Wickland became chief
psychiatrist at the National Psychopathic Institute of Chicago in 1909,
where he remained until 1918. Later the Wicklands moved to Los Angeles,
California, where the doctor founded the National Psychological Institute, a
non-profit corporation for research in psychology. At the sanitarium,
operated by the National Psychological Institute, from six to ten
patients at a time were cared
for and brought back to sanity and health.
In 1924 Dr. Wickland, in
collaboration with Nelle Watts, Celia and Orlando Goerz, his assistants,
wrote and published THIRTY YEARS AMONG THE DEAD, a book that has become
a classic in abnormal psychology. This book had five editions in the
U.S.A. and three printings in England. This book was translated and
published in the Netherlands under the title DERTIG JAREN ONDER DE
DOODEN. Title of the Spanish translation was 30 ANOS ENTRE LOS MUERTOS.
The first edition of GATEWAY OF
UNDERSTANDING was published in 1934. Shortly after the death of Dr.
Wickland, Wing Anderson, a pioneer in sleep suggestion therapy for the
correction of psychosomatic ills, purchased copyrights and plates of the
Wickland books. Public demand led to the publication of this sixth
edition of GATEWAY OF UNDERSTANDING. The American Edition of THIRTY
YEARS AMONG THE DEAD is temporarily out of print but the
English Edition can be obtained from
the National Psychological Institute.
A decade after the death of Dr.
Wickland in 1945 orthodox psychiatry lags a half
century behind Dr. Wickland in knowledge and efficiency in the cure of
insanity.
